Writing SOS

Copy Writing, Editing, Mentoring & Coaching Services

Do you have a manuscript, an essay, a grant application or other written content that you need professional help with?

Editing Services

The process of editing is an art form that can help get your message, or story, clearer and more effective. Not to mention, save you from those embarrassing spelling mistakes that you typed out late at night (it happns to d bast of us!).

As a writer (with an editor of my own), I understand all too well how vulnerable it can feel to share your writing. But this art form is less about “killing your darlings,” and more about cutting through the confusion and arriving at the heart of the matter. It means increasing your chances of landing that desirable job, a grant, or selling your product on your website. Often, we are too close to our material to have a critical, objective opinion on our own writing. This is where a knowledgeable editor can really help to take your writing to the next level.

Here are the types of editing services I offer:

  • Substantive/structural editing: Clarifying or reorganizing a manuscript for content and structure
  • Stylistic editing: Clarifying meaning, eliminating jargon, polishing language, and other line-by-line editing.
  • Copy editing: Editing for grammar, usage, spelling, punctuation, and other mechanics of style.
  • Proofreading: Checking page for mechanical errors in copy, such as spelling mistakes.

My promise to you:

  • Professional and precise editing services. I take my work seriously.
  • Care about your work. If I agree to take you on as a client, that means I am fully invested in your project and will go the extra mile to see it through. If, on the other hand, I feel that another editor will be more suitable for your work, I will be honest and tell you.
  • A compassionate approach that seeks to support you as a writer, always.
  • Honest feedback that seeks to elevate your message/story.
  • Editing that is aligned with your desired purpose and target audience.
  • Timely completion of the work requested. I am fast and efficient.

Rate: C$60 / €45 Euro an hour (as recommended by ‘Editors Canada’). Although I am fast and efficient, the time it will take me to edit your document/script/content will largely depend on:

  1. The level of editing you desire. Basic proofreading and general critique will take less time than a thorough structural and stylistic editing.
  2. Your draft. The more polished your draft, the less time it will take me to complete the final edits.

Therefore, if you wish to have a more accurate quote, I recommend that you send it along for the hourly editing rate, and I will get back to you with an estimate for the project.

What others are saying…

At two weeks to go until a month-long period abroad, with mountains of PhD, house and family related tasks to finish, I was feeling completely overwhelmed. How was I going to get it all done in time? I’ve known Imola for years and had seen her overcome similar challenges with impressive equanimity and effectiveness, so I sent her an SOS: Could she help me come up with — and stick to — a work-yoga-meditation routine that would enable me to achieve these short-term goals while staying healthy in mind and spirit? She really delivered, even when a major, unexpected house problem emerged on top of everything else! I highly recommend Imola as your work-life balance guru, especially in those moments when things are getting out of hand!

PHD student & mother

I had a difficult time writing my academic article all summer due to burnout from directing and producing my documentary, as well as disruptions from kitchen renovations and work on the house. Imola offered to spend a day with me and listened attentively to my struggles and why I was having difficulty. What I realized I was missing was a sense of structure. Imola helped me center myself, quiet my mind, and overcome the thought that I had failed or was about to fail. I got back to writing and delivered my draft on time to my editors. Imola has an innate sense of support for writing and the creative process, with sensitivity to all its stages, offering words of encouragement when needed. Anyone would be lucky to have her help them on their journey.
